For today’s #SundaySpotlight, the Lafourche Schools Spotlight shines brightly on student Cullen Murillo.
Cullen is a senior at Thibodaux High School, where he is active in Student Council, Beta Club, Senior Class Council, Drama Club, Christian Club, National Honor Society and the Tiger TV Broadcast. This year he has been serving on the Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council and was the Student Council president and the Louisiana Association of Student Councils (LASC) District IV president. He was honored as THS’ 12th grade Student of the Year and the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce’s Teenager of the Year.
“Cullen brings kindness, determination, and a great attitude to everything he does,” said THS principal Rebecca Hebert. “Whether it is in the classroom, in the hallways, with friends, in the community or participating in school activities, Cullen shows what it means to have school spirit while being a leader and role model. Cullen represents the very best of our school and is truly deserving of this spotlight.”
Cullen’s success is a direct result of the mindset he’s been cultivating throughout his time at THS, and he says that the most important lesson he’s learned during his high school career is that hard work truly does pay off.
“As a freshman, sophomore, and junior in high school, I worked really hard inside and outside of school hours every day with many different activities, and this year I’ve been fortunate enough to be honored and rewarded several times for my efforts,” Cullen shared. “Being a student in our district means that your hard work does not go unnoticed.“
With years of experience under his belt, Cullen has become a passionate advocate for campus life, eager to share what he has learned with those following in his footsteps.
“My #1 piece of advice for any younger student is to get involved,” he said. “There is no easier way to put yourself out there and make meaningful connections than by getting involved with organizations on campus. Not only is it fun, but it gives you something to look forward to outside of school hours while making you feel purposeful.”
Cullen is the son of Christian and Kristy Murillo, who echo the sentiments of his school leadership, emphasizing the values that make him the person he is today.
“We are so proud of Cullen's dedication to his schoolwork and the organizations he belongs to,” Kristy said. “He is dependable and hardworking, and his passion for leadership and community service, along with his kindness and ability to include others is remarkable. He is an amazing son and a great role model for his siblings. We can’t wait to see him achieve his future goals he has set for himself.”
Cullen exemplifies the character and leadership we strive to foster within the Lafourche Parish School District. Please join us in celebrating his successes and the impact he has made on his school, community and state. Way to go, Cullen!
